Elephants are known for their extremely long gestation period of almost 22 years. But did you know that female elephants can become mothers right up to the age of 50? Apart from their size elephants have some other quite unique traits in the animal kingdom. The have the best sense of smell of all animals, enabling them to detect water from miles away. A crucial task in a dry climate, as grown elephants need around 60 liters of water (and almost 300 kg of food) to keep their impressive weight.

Have you ever wondered why elephants use their trunks to ‘shower’ themselves with sand? Well, they want to protect themselves from sunburn and sand or mud offers the highest SPF in a shadow free savanna.
