Pistachios and cashews belong to the same family. Pistachios, at least the unsalted ones, are very healthy. A normal serving of one ounce, so around 49 nuts, provides the same amount of calories and proteins as an egg. They also provide over 30 different vitamins and many important minerals. Not too bad for a tasty snack!

What’s more, the snack might even reduce your calorie intake. One study found that participants who had pistachio shells on their desk consumed around 18 % less! Unfortunately, there has been no more research in that direction.

Because the nut seems to have a smiley face, it was dubbed the “happy nut” in China. That smiling food has become a popular gift during Chinese New Year as a symbolic giving of good fortune, happiness and health.
