You probably heard that the Incas didn’t keep written records. However, they were using a knots to write things down! Quipu use a system of knots to “write” things down. The method used a long main rope, to which colorful shorter ropes were attached in a specific order. Up to ten different kinds of knots were tied into those shorter strings.
Researchers assume that some of these talking knots were worn as a necklace. Nobody knows for sure how or where this kind of record keeping originated, but it’s clearly very old and the Incas weren’t the first one to use it. The oldest quipus found has been dated to a time between 2600 and 2100 BC! So far researchers are still puzzled to what was written in those necklaces.
